Gadgets, gadgets everywhere. Gadgets and technology have grown up to be an increasingly important part of our lives. From dawn to dusk, we are using one gadget or the other. We feel handicapped without gadgets. We invest so much of our time and money into our gadgets.

The rise of the hi-tech gadgets has made an enormous impact on our lives, and have led us to think carefully about how we value and protect our belongings. Items such as mobile phones, laptops, cameras, tablets, music players, eBooks and GPS devices are extremely robust and expensive goods. Their portable nature means that they are also a high security risk, vulnerable to theft, damage and loss when taken out.

“Our possessions provide rich pickings for thieves and, given the portable nature of our gadgets, we’ve now got more to lose, too.” – Matt Reid, specialist gadget insurance provider.

We invest so much of our time and money into our gadgets and the question is whether gadget insurance is worth the investment? With the substantial amount of money we spend on gadgets, protection with gadget insurance is valuable to have. We are provided a peace of mind that money put into your gadgets will not be a waste of money if an accident happens, such as a spill.

As mobile devices become more integrated into daily life—and also become more expensive—gadget insurance is something that anyone who has purchased a device should consider. With sensitive data like bank account details, contacts’ names and addresses, work-related emails, and other information now stored on most people’s gadgets, the consequences of losing a device or even being without it for a few days are becoming more severe. There are a number of gadget insurance options to choose from, so it is important to thoroughly research all available plans. Those considering insurance for a mobile device should ask themselves whether they are prone to lose their gadgets, commonly drop them, or have highly breakable devices. This will help them better understand when to consider coverage and what options to consider.

Considering how expensive these gadgets are and our tendency to carry them everywhere, having an extended warranty plan is more important than ever. Whether you have an iPhone, Android, iPad or any other mobile gadget it’s important that you find an extended warranty service that protects you against loss, theft, water damage, and mechanical breakdowns.

As the price of trendy gadgets increase, the best time to consider gadget insurance would perhaps be right after the initial purchase is made or mobile contract entered into. There is no use in waiting, given that accidents happen even to devices fresh out of the box, and the manufacturer’s warranty sometimes does not cover such damage. Insuring a gadget right from the get-go is good.

Some key points before you plan your warranty:
Consider coverage you may already have through your warranty, home insurance, travel insurance, bank account or credit card.
If this is insufficient, think about extending coverage on your home insurance, or taking out a dedicated gadget insurance policy.
Don’t just accept a policy offered by the retailer selling you the gadget.

Xiaomi is gearing up to enter the PC segment with the launch of its first laptop.

Xiaomi had an impressive year when it came to device sales across segments and markets, including the Indian market. After Xiaomi phones, ACs and water purifiers buzzing in the tech world, Xiaomi has plans to introduce linux based laptops too, and get into a strenuous fight with Apple and Lenovo.

Samsung Electronics is proposed to supply memory chips, and that may extend to providing displays. While this will boost Samsung’s components business, Xiaomi’s laptops will call for a fight among HP, Lenovo and Apple, who have been the market rulers for a decade now. With Xiaomi getting into the PC business, it is bringing additional cost pressures against industry leaders Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Apple.

Xiaomi’s notebook would be available in the first quarter to compete with such premium computers as Apple’s MacBook Air and Lenovo’s ThinkPad. According to the leaked details, the Xiaomi laptop will feature a large 15-inch display with a full-HD (1080p) resolution. The laptop is said to pack an Intel Haswell processor (Core i7-4500U) and feature two 8GB dual channel memory modules, which means it will pack a total of 16GB of RAM.

The alleged Mi laptop has been also leaked in few images that show similar design aesthetics to Apple’s Macbook Air range, featuring a similar color scheme, bezel size, keyboard style, and other details. . The Chinese brand will price its first laptop at as low as CNY 2,999 (Rs. 30,700 approximately).

Within five years, Xiaomi has climbed up the industry rankings by providing stylish devices with premium components at mid-range prices.

Xiaomi was claimed to be the third-largest mobile phone vendor in terms of smart phones sold replacing Huawei in the third quarter this year, according to a market research firm. Xiaomi India Head, Manu Kumar Jain announced that the Chinese smart phone brand had crossed a major milestone in India this month, managing to sell 1 million smart phones in the country since its entry in July. The company had also announced that its first fitness tracker, the Mi Band, enjoyed great success as the company shipped over 1 million units since the tracker went on sale on August 18.

Worldwide smart phone sales recorded their slowest growth rate since 2013 in the second quarter of 2015, according to Gartner. Xiaomi’s venture into PCs comes as growth in its core market winds down. A rapidly maturing home market has prompted Xiaomi to look toward India, Brazil and other less-saturated smart phone arenas.

Facebook Messenger is an instant messaging service and software application which provides text and voice communication. Integrated with Facebook’s web-based Chat feature and built on the open MQTT protocol, Messenger lets Facebook users chat with friends both on mobile and on the main website.

One of the benefits of the app is it allows you to mobile-message people instantly who may be connected to you on Facebook, but whose contact details you might not have otherwise.

Facebook is testing a service that will allow users of its Messenger app to hail Uber rides directly from the app, without leaving a conversation or downloading the ride-hailing app. Uber is the first partner for the Transportation on Messenger service, which will be available to select users in locations where Uber operates in the United States. This service provides a “huge market place” for Uber.

Facebook has been aggressively working to boost the appeal of its messenger service, including making it mandatory last year for users to install a separate app to send and receive messages. Since then, Facebook has steered up the app’s features by allowing users to send and receive money through Messenger.

Facebook is looking at this as a way to make Messenger more attractive.

Facebook has also launched the update for Messenger which will now allow it to work on Apple watch.

The app will allow the users to send voice clips, likes, stickers and more according to the app description. The users Messenger contacts and conversations will now appear directly in iPhone’s native search results. Messenger has been updated to support the iPad’s multitasking features in iOS 9, so the users can keep conversations going while browsing the web. The new version of Messenger is available now in the App Store.

This is another major step for Facebook Messenger as it looks to expand beyond simple messaging. Facebook is looking to bring more capabilities to the Messenger app, like booking flights and concert tickets.

Facebook Messenger is following the footsteps of Asian messaging apps like WeChat, Line, and KakaoTalk, which integrate a bunch of services—from games to e-commerce—to become a vital part of everyday life for mobile users.

With tablet sales dwindling, Google and other manufacturers have been looking for ways to boost demand. They are trying is to make the devices function more like laptops via attachable keyboards and other features that can help users accomplish workday tasks.

It’s something that Microsoft and Apple already offer. Google aims to keep pace with Microsoft and Apple by adding a way for Android tablet users to view and work with two apps side-by-side. By allowing multitasking, split screen lets a tablet better emulate the experience of a PC.

Split screen is in the works for next year’s major upgrade to Android to version 7.0. Google is working hard on a range of enhancements for Android in this form factor.

Split screen has been available on Windows tablets via a feature called Snap Assist for Windows 8 debuted in 2012. Users can open one app and then snap a second app onto the screen, viewing them both at the same time. Windows 10 enhanced the feature by adding the ability to snap up to four apps on the screen at the same time.

Apple got into the split-screen game with the release of its iOS 9 software in September. Displaying two apps together, the Split View feature was available for this year’s iPad Pro and the iPad Mini 4 as well as last year’s iPad Air 2.

Google is going to officially implement ‘split screen’ as a feature of the OS for tablet users. This follows the launch of the Pixel C, which was the first tablet to be designed directly by Google. The Pixel C is the first tablet ever designed by Google itself, and with its keyboard attachment could have demonstrated Android’s potential as an operating system for productivity.

Unfortunately, while the tablet does come with a keyboard for productivity, the lack of features in the OS hinders Android for those who would potentially want to use the Pixel C as a laptop replacement for work purposes. However, the team behind the tablet know this and are working on it.
